Okay, I am coming out...

I admit it...I am a closet Princess fan.

When we first found out we were going to have a girl, we were surprised. We thought we were going to have a boy, although I am not sure why. We had several boy names ready to go, but no girl names. Everyone around us seem to have boys, so I guess we figured, we would have one too.

However, God, of course, knew what He was doing & gave us a girl. I understand girls, well as much as anyone can, I guess; &, in retrospect, I know nothing about how to raise a boy. We just are not into really girly things. I hate ruffles & have little tolerance for lace. I was against pink, or at least an abundance of pink, at first, but now I find Riley adorable in pink (plus, then people know she is a girl). I have no clue how to do a girl's hair, but that has yet to be a problem. Also, Aaron does NOT want his little girl to be into princesses because, as he put it, "it is not practical." Unfortunately for him, when someone kindly gave Riley a princess bus for her birthday, she was ecstatic & still loves playing with it everyday. Well Daddy, I am sorry to say, but Mommy likes princesses too.

Okay, let me first say that, we both agree on the fact that we do not want Riley to grow up with that modern-day princess attitude ,where she does not think she has to work for anything, but will instead marry rich. That is out of the question. What I love is the fantasy & fairy tale princess stuff. Girls play with dolls, play dress up & pretend, that is just what they do. There is a possibility for so much creativity & imagination in these fantastical stories.

I was actually inspired to write this post because for Easter, I bought Riley the DVD of Disney's The Little Mermaid...& I was really excited when I did so. I LOVE The Little Mermaid! I also LOVE Beauty & The Beast. I also just saw Enchanted last week & LOVED that too! So, yes, I am a closet Princess fan. I admit it. No, I am not obsessive, & by no means am I going to push any of this Princess stuff on Riley, nor am I going to go overboard & buy all the stuff toy & marketing companies want you to buy...BUT, I do like the stories.

In fact, writing this post reminded me of something from my childhood. A treasured memory, if you will.

Did any of you ever have a movie when you were a kid that you would watch over and over and over and over again? For me, it was Wizard of Oz for awhile; but then is was...well, I am not sure what the name of it is, but it is something like, Once Upon a Time. This was back in the 80's & I think they have made another movie by that title. It is not a Disney movie, but it is an animated movie. I do not think it was a musical, but I am not sure. All I remember of it is that there were 2 sisters, 1 pretty, nice, gentle sister & 1 brunette (aren't they always), mean sister. The nice sister had this little blue dog. The prince wanted to marry the nice sister & the mean sister pushed her nice sister down a well that led into another world. The dog went too, but I am not sure how. The blue dog is the main visual image I can recall. Does anyone have any clue what this movie is? When I reached my teens, I tried to find this movie again, but I couldn't. I used to rent it every time my mom took me to The Wherehouse in Costa Mesa to rent movies. I would love to get it for Riley, but I have no clue where to find it. Do you think any of you can find this for me?

Oh WAIT! I just googled, "Once Upon A Time blue dog" & I found it!!!! Amazon has it & on DVD...I am shocked. The Internet & Google are amazing. Here it is:

ONCE UPON A TIME is an enchanting animated tale about a beautiful girl named Maria and her little blue dog, Bello. When her widowed father remarries, Maria is mistreated by her wicked new stepmother and meddlesome stepsister. One day while walking in the forest, Maria meets a handsome Prince disguised as a hunter. He leaves her with a garnet necklace as a memento of their chance encounter and a symbol of his undying love. Later the Prince announces plans to marry the unknown girl with the garnet necklace. Young maids throughout the land come to the castle with hopes of being selected. The Prince will have none of them. But alas, the necklace has fallen down a well and the two sisters plunge headlong into a magical world beneath the water to retrieve it.
Wow, what a flashback! I am so excited to have the opportunity to share some treasured childhood memories of mine with Riley.
What was that one movie you just had to watch???

Hi Mindy, Megan's friend Barbie here. I just had to comment on this post because of your movie flashback. My sister and I always refer to our favorite kiddo movie...the Hug a Bunch movie. I loved...the young berries the hugs softening the mirror to get to hug a bunch land. We actually watched Secret Garden with my 6th graders after we read it and I kept thinking the actress looked familiar and then I realized she was the girl from the Hug a Bunch movie. Random, I know :)

Thank you so much for this post...for like ten years I've been trying to figure out what the name of this movie was and yearning to see it again:) Glad I'm not the only one...by the way I used to rent it every time we went to the independently owned video store and watch it over and over again as well :)

We used to live at an American Embassy in Jakarta Indonesia as young girls and watched it ALL the time. We NEVER thought we would ever find it again till now. Thank you SO much! Now we can order it and share it with my sister's kids:)How amazing is the internet???
